ALTE's primary focus is to capacitate K-12 students with Knowledge Economy skills,

where their success is in being able to collaborate and use information to solve complex

problems, in being able to adapt and innovate in response to new demands and changing

circumstances, improve their communication and work together with their peers in small

group innovative learning environments. They are able to marshal and expand the power

of technology to create new knowledge and expand human capacity and productivity,

and acquire a mastery of the subject matters being studied through deep learning.

Secondarily, but equally important, is ALTE's focus on training educators as facilitators of learning.

This is a radical departure from the current mode of teaching in use for the past 200 years. In

the past, education was about teaching people something in a very narrow context in silos that

impeded connections between teachers and students. Today on many fronts, education is or is

increasingly becoming multidisciplinary, and is more about making sure that individuals develop

a reliable compass and the navigation skills to find their way through an increasingly uncertain,

volatile and ambiguous world, echoing futurists’ call to think about possibilities. ALTE aims to

provide that compass by creating innovative learning environments In a knowledge-based economy,

where educators are capacitated with the proper skills to help their students navigate modern

societies, ones that are increasingly based on information and knowledge, become invaluable.

Such skilled teachers help build workforces with adequate ICT skills to handle information, and

are reflective, creative and adept at problem-solving in order to generate knowledge.

In designing the teacher training component of the model, we looked to recommendations from

esteemed organizations such as UNESCO and OECD to align the project’s teacher training

component that will enable teachers, principals, adjunct faculty and technology staff in K-12

education to acquire skills toward technology literacy(enabling students to use ICTs to learn

more efficiently, knowledge deepening (helping students acquire in-depth knowledge of the

subjects being studied and apply it to complex,real-world problems, and knowledge creation

(with the end results being able to create new knowledge). These are the skills set forth by

UNESCO’s ICT Competency Framework for Teachers, and educators equipped with these

competences have become more important than ever to ensure their students have the knowledge

and skills they need to succeed - in school, as future employees or entrepreneurs, and in life.

ALTE is centered around knowledge-building pedagogy utilizing technology formulated spcifically

for knowledge-building learning environments in the form of a digital workspace, accessible via

the Internet or housed on local servers. This technology is the heart of computer-supported

collaborative learning environments that allow individuals to engage in learning to expand their

thinking, apply creativity and critical thinking to problem-solving and decision-making, and acquire

skills that will help them communicate and work in collaboration with others. The model supports

learning progressions to help teachers use scaffolding and the scientific method in a student’s

learning processes. ALTE classrooms across the street or around the world are partnered for

an added element of collaborative learning, creating opportunities for students to share ideas

and experiences from different social and economic environments to make global connections.

Teachers are networked through a digital Community of Practice to share experiences, be mentored

and access resources in their needs for continuous professional development.

The Currency

of the

21st Century

The question on everyone's mind:

Teacher's Manual for Carbon Footprint

Curriculum - Smart Cities K-12 Initiative

When working within collaborative learning environments, members

of a small group gathered around a problem, objective or plan are

learning with others by capitalizing on different skills and

experiences to solve problems. In the process, they become

co-learners, gaining knowledge from the experiences of others

in their group to achieve their learning objectives around the

production and continual improvement of ideas, which are the

currency of the 21st Century Knowledge Age. When discourse

around ideas can be supported in learning environments whose

members can share knowledge that will benefit all reciprocally,

individual ideas can be transformed into action from the collective

knowledge accumulation of a group. Collaborative Learning Communities

of 21st Century research, business, and government support sharing

ideas, information and  work on common issues and shared  problems

to achieve a common goal.

We are stuck in 19th Century education – an industry

by all definitions of the word and a sector ripe for

disruption. Why? Because K-12 students are not

acquiring the skills needed to:
      -
succeed in K-12 education or be

        college-ready or career-ready if

        they do graduate high school,
      -
become productive employees,

        without access to mechanisms

allowing them to acquire the skills

        demanded by the Knowledge

      -
participate in a global society

in the Knowledge Age in an era of globalization.

Let's stop asking students what they want to be or do when they grow up. Ask them what problems they want to solve and what they need to learn in order to solve those problems

ALTE - Alternative Learning & Teaching Ecosystem

The U.S. Department of Education's Investing in Innovation (i3) Program

sought guidance on implementing internationally benchmarked

College- and Career-ready Standards and Assessments.
Our reply: The ALTE model supports the tools educators (teachers, principals and technology staff)

need to align with several international efforts to set new standards and

promote new teaching and learning for 21st Century Education needed for the Knowledge Economy.

So how can students learn the skills they need for jobs we don't

even know will be created, for technologies that have not yet been

invented and solve problems that have not yet been anticipated ?

ALTE - the Alternative Learning and Teaching Ecosystem - supports collaborative learning

environments in classrooms that function as scientific communities around problem-solving

in an interdisciplinary examination of topics. A demonstration of the practical application of

knowledge-building pedagogy can be found in these case studies:

The ALTE Global Learning Ecosystem

Prepares Today's Students for Tomorrow's Challenges

By answering  “how?”, mankind pursues solutions

to problems and situations of great consequence

to all people on earth; The “hows?” accomplish

what many think is impossible, and the impossible

become not only possible but common place. The

“how?” withstands the testament of time and

continues to provoke the innovation, ingenuity

and creativity of those who dare to dream of

accomplishing something great.

Students in ALTE's interdisciplinary learning

environments learn to probe authentic questions

regarding real-world challenges. Through computer-

supported collaborative learning, they acquire critical

21st Century skills in K-12 to unlock important traits –

scientific curiosity, innovation and creativity - to ask the

question, "how?", one day becoming the leaders,

educators, workforce and engaged citizens of a global

society of the Knowledge Age.

As members of the ALTE Community of Practice, teachers utilize

an array of tools to become facilitators of learning, thus transforming

the classroom into 21st Century collaborative learning environments.

They value how students engage in inquiry, enabling them to function

as do professionals – scientists, business people, and community

leaders – responding to real-world problems in collaborative learning

communities similar to those in research, government and business.
